The signing of Senate Bill 169 in South Dakota, establishing clear rights for drone operators and emphasizing FAA authority, showcases a proactive approach to integrating drone technology into commercial and recreational spheres. This initiative highlights the state’s readiness to embrace the economic and operational advantages of drones, setting a legislative model for other states like Ohio to foster a regulatory environment conducive to drone technology growth. Such measures not only encourage innovation and development within the drone industry but also prepare states to efficiently manage and benefit from advancements in uncrewed vehicle systems. An article by AUVSI shares more:
This month, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem signed Senate Bill 169 into law after its unanimous passage in the State’s Senate and 67-2 passage in the House of Representatives.
The law codifies the rights of commercial and recreational drone operators, reaffirms the authority of the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) over air navigation and aviation safety issues, and prevents the future adoption of unnecessary laws that specifically target drone technology.
On behalf of the Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI), Elizabeth Sila, Manager of Government Affairs made the following statement:
“AUVSI is proud to announce that South Dakota is ‘Drone Prepared’ and ready to welcome the benefits that widespread commercial drone operations will bring to the state. We are grateful for opportunities to collaborate closely with state lawmakers to educate them on the challenges and opportunities facing our industry and to support legislation that will foster a regulatory environment that enables growth for years to come.”
Soaring to new heights, together.
