Ohio is known as the birthplace of aviation, with many significant contributions to the field of aviation having been made in the state. Some of the most notable figures in Ohio aviation history are the Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur. The Wright brothers were born in Dayton, Ohio and it was there that they developed and tested the world’s first successful powered airplane. The Wright brothers’ work laid the foundation for the aviation industry as we know it today.

In addition to the Wright brothers, Ohio has a rich history of aviation innovation. The Dayton-Wright Airplane Company, founded by the Wright brothers, manufactured military airplanes during World War I. The Huffman Prairie Flying Field, located near Dayton, was used by the Wright brothers for test flights and was later used as an Army Air Service training field during World War I.

Ohio is also home to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, which is the largest single-site employer in the state and is a major contributor to the state’s economy. The base is home to the Air Force Research Laboratory and the National Museum of the United States Air Force.

Drones, or Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UASs), have become a major part of the aviation industry in recent years. Ohio is home to several companies that design and manufacture drones. Drones are used for a wide range of applications including aerial photography, surveying, search and rescue, and delivery.

The use of drones in Ohio has also been increasing in recent years. The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has been using drones to inspect bridges and other infrastructure. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has also been using drones to monitor and inspect wetlands.

Ohio’s rich aviation history and its current contributions to the industry make it a leader in the field of aviation. With the increasing use of drones in various applications, Ohio is well-positioned to continue to be at the forefront of aviation innovation in the future.
